About Chenai Chair

Who am I?

Curiosity, social justice, and a need for gender equity drive my interest in digital technology. My work focuses on digital rights through research to influence public interest policy and civil society engagement; advisory to technologists to think of how their technology affects women and gender diverse people, and philanthropic interventions to support leadership growth and sustainability of feminist movements on the African continent.

My work draws on principles of feminism to think through digital technology interventions in their contexts and how they connect globally. I have worked on women’s rights online, digital identity, online gender-based violence, and data and AI projects. My career includes being a Researcher, Communication and Evaluations Manager at Research ICT Africa; Gender and Digital Rights Research Manager at Web Foundation leading the Women’s Rights online work; and Senior Program Officer at Mozilla Foundation leading Africa Innovation Mradi. I am also the founder of My Data Rights (Africa)  dedicated to making a meaningful impact in Africa’s world of data and digital technology by challenging systemic oppression, particularly sexism, gender inequality, and discrimination based on sexual orientation.

As of October 2024, I took a wellness break to rest and reset from the important work of ensuring digital technology addresses societal needs. I look forward to re-engaging in 2025.

“I treasure and hold my multiple identities because that gives me the freedom to pursue my multiple interests and enables me to be who I want to be.” – Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah
